Research peptide vials

The vial is the standard format for research peptides. Each glass vial holds the compound as a lyophilised, or freeze-dried, powder under a rubber stopper and an aluminium seal. Freeze-drying removes the water that would otherwise break the peptide down, which is why a dry vial stays stable at ambient temperature during transit and keeps far longer than any solution. The stated mass on the label, for example 10 mg, is the amount of compound in that vial.

In the lab a vial is reconstituted before use. Bacteriostatic water is added slowly down the inside wall, the vial is swirled gently rather than shaken, and the solution is then kept refrigerated and protected from light. The volume of water decides the concentration, so the same 10 mg vial can be prepared at different strengths.
